Sommeliers undergo intensive training to become internationally certified wine professionals. Master Sommeliers spend thousands of hours crafting their knowledge, gaining experience, and passing the daunting exam, available only once yearly. After all the dedication Sommeliers put into their careers, they find work at high-end restaurants, wine bars, and sometimes with wineries themselves. Similarly, chefs put years into their art, attending fine culinary institutions with the hopes of joining prestigious eateries or opening their own and making a name for themselves. Legends hold the top spots in both fields, giving newbies something to aspire to.
So it probably sounds as if I turned up to a New York City Government building, complete with ID and security guards, and dressed in a suit fitting for a meeting at Mad Men's Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce office. Yes and no.
I did arrive dressed for the setting; however, it was not a government building nor an ad agency.
Happily making my way downtown for dinner, the first thing I noticed about Kiki's Greek/Mediterranean restaurant was that it was difficult to notice at all - I went into the wrong restaurant next door. The restaurant with lights.
The restaurant industry was shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, and this caused a lot of changes both in the fast food and fine dining scenes. And while our choice of restaurant still depends on factors like food prices, menu selection, and preparation time, among others, could fast food begin to triumph even against the luxurious fine dining experience?
Private and personal chefs have a lot in common when it comes to their job descriptions.
They are equally expected to deliver high-quality food according to their clients' liking and needs. Of course, this includes considering their health conditions, preferences, and available resources.
But there are still significant differences that make each its own unique career.
When it comes to winning the hearts and wallets of customers, there is one factor that outweighs everything else, ambiance. Diners won’t remember how fabulous the food was or the server’s attentiveness if the overall look and feel of the restaurant is lacking.
This has forever been the protruding thorn in my side - on the one hand, I need to keep my diet healthy and low carb, but on the other, I want to dine out as much as possible. And here we are again, entering a brand new year with brand new resolutions of grandeur. Oh joy!
Nothing is better than an excellent glass of wine paired with the perfect meal. If properly matched, the wine will lend depth to the meal, bringing out a myriad of wonderful tastes and flavors.
Drinking less wine is pointless because it has many neurological and physical benefits for the body. However, the healthy wine debate continues to rage on.
Imagine the scenario: you're having a great time and just left Gabriel Kreuther or perhaps Valbella in Bryant Park, after a tantalizing tasting menu and great wine. One of New York City's great offerings to foodies everywhere is a surefire epic meal out at a stellar restaurant.
